Isopod Care & Function
What Are Isopods?
Often called "Rolly Pollies" or "Pill Bugs" these small invertebrates serve as decomposers in ecosystems around the world! These fantasic inverterbrates break down organic matter (from trees to animals) and also consume heavy metals and minerals that are in the soil! These animals are found in nearly all ecosytems from deserts to tropical rain forests!
Isopod Function
These amazing creatures have a wide range of purposes from pets for collectors to feeders for your reptiles, tarantulas and other invertebrates. The bioactive movement has really caused these fascinating animals to become very popular due to their wide range of sizes, and colors!
Isopod Setup
In general isopods just need a good quality soil with organic matter (we use a blend of peat moss, top soil, coco fiber and charcoal), a cork or wood flat to hide under and a ventlated tub. Optimal tempeartures for most species is around 75 degrees and these do not need any lighting to thrive.
Isopod Maintenance
While isopods primarily eat the soil that they are placed on, we also provide supplmental food to simulate natural availability to organic matter. We recommend weekly feeding and mistting of different organic food items including bee pollen, Repashy Bug Burger & Morning Wood, dried minnows and shrimp. Be careful to not overfeed your 'pods to prevent smells and pests.
