Theraphosinae sp. 'Colombia' (Colombian Crowned Tarantula)
Theraphosinae sp. 'Colombia' is a true stunner out of Colombia, showing bright yellow-orange and black coloration topped with an eye catching crowned pattern. Adults feature an amazing orange crown on the carapace (head) set against a matte black base that makes the color pop, while the abdomen carries a bright orange coloration that develops a striking blush orange overlay of setae on larger individuals, layered over the brighter color underneath. The legs are orange with darker green femurs, and while the photos here show a juvenile, the adults are even more beautiful in person. This terrestrial species is expected to reach around 4 inches at full leg span, making it a great pickup if you are searching for a new world tarantula for sale with real size and presence.
Why do hobbyists keep Theraphosinae sp. 'Colombia'?
- Stunning Coloration: An orange crown over a matte black base, a bright orange abdomen, and orange legs with darker green femurs come together for one of the more striking looks in the hobby.
- Colorful Spiderlings: Slings start out larger than many comparable species at around 0.75" and already show the adult pattern across the carapace and abdomen right out of the gate.
- Heavy Webber: A heavy webbing, brush dwelling species that lays down noticeable webbing throughout the enclosure.
- Great Display Species: Slings climb readily and adults rarely dig unless they need to, keeping this species more visible than many ground dwelling terrestrials.
- Rare in the Hobby: A species that has held onto its popularity thanks to impressive size, standout coloration, and being genuinely difficult to breed, making captive bred offspring a real find.
How should Theraphosinae sp. 'Colombia' be kept?
- Adult Size: Expected to reach around 4 inches at full leg span. A satisfying medium sized terrestrial with real presence in a collection.
- Enclosure: Provide a terrestrial setup roughly 3 times the leg span in width and depth, and 2 times the leg span in height, with substrate at least equal to the leg span in depth. Add cork bark or branches as anchor points to support this species' climbing and webbing habits. For a 0.75 to 1 inch sling, start around 3 by 3 by 3 inches, and size up as it grows.
- Temperature: Keep between 65 to 75 degrees F.
- Humidity: Keep the substrate from drying out, this species does best with a bit more moisture on hand. Good ventilation is critical. Cross ventilation works best, but ample top ventilation can also be effective as long as the enclosure is not over misted.
- Water: A shallow textured water dish works well, something they can grip when climbing out.
- Diet: Crickets, roaches, and similar feeders sized to the carapace (head).
- Temperament: Alert and active, quick to climb and explore the space it's given.
Are there any additional notes or considerations?
- Climbing Behavior: Slings climb readily and adults rarely dig unless they need to, a pattern we suspect helps this species avoid flooding in its native habitat, similar to what we've observed in Hapalopus planetearth (formerly Theraphosinae sp. "Yasuni").
- Sling Appearance: Slings begin at a larger 0.75 to 1 inch size and already display the adult pattern on the carapace and abdomen, developing further coloration as they grow toward full adult size.
- Captive Bred: All Tarantulas are 100% captive bred.
