Description

Psalmopoeus irminia (Venezuelan Suntiger Tarantula)

The Venezuelan Suntiger, or Psalmopoeus irminia, is a New World arboreal tarantula from Venezuela. Adults have a black coloration with stunning reflective orange highlights across the legs and body, colorful throughout its life. Even from spiderlings the species is colorful, carrying that bold black and reflective orange contrast from hatch and building into the full adult look as it grows. This species only grows to about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span, with a fast growth rate, one of the fastest growing genera in the hobby. Females live about 10 years while males typically live only 2 to 3. This is a fast, alert species that keeps you on your toes rather than a calm handler's pet, and we recommend it for keepers who already have some arboreal experience. Grab this new world tarantula for sale today, offered here as every size we carry, from spiderling to mature.

Why do hobbyists keep the Venezuelan Suntiger?

  • Black & Reflective Orange Coloration + Colorful Spiderlings: A striking high contrast look that holds up from the spiderling stage through adulthood.
  • Great Feeding Response: Fast, eager, and fun to watch take down prey.
  • Heavy Webber: Builds dense, visible web retreats that become part of the display.
  • Fast Growth Rate: One of the fastest growing genera in the hobby.

How should Psalmopoeus irminia be kept?

  • Adult Size: Hatches out around 0.5 to 0.75 inch and grows to about 5 to 6 inches in diagonal leg span as an adult, so plan on upsizing the enclosure twice over the animal's life.
  • Enclosure: Enclosure size depends on which size you choose. Each size page below gives the exact enclosure dimensions, substrate depth, and furnishings for that specific animal.
  • Setup Tips: Real cork bark or wood pieces make a significant difference for this species. They give it natural climbing surfaces and webbing anchor points at every size, which helps it settle in and start building its tube faster.
  • Rehousing: This species moves through three enclosures over its life at this growth rate, each one lasting roughly 6 to 8 months before the next upsize.
  • Temperature: 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity, 65 to 75 percent, paired with good cross ventilation.
  • Water: A shallow water dish placed in an elevated position, refreshed weekly with a light misting.
  • Diet: We recommend prey size from 1/8 inch up to 1 1/2 inch depending on the size you choose, offered at least once a week.
  • Temperament: Fast and alert rather than calm, this is a great choice for a keeper who already has some arboreal experience and wants an animal that keeps them on their toes.

Are there any additional notes or considerations for Psalmopoeus irminia?

  • Native Range: This species comes from Venezuela, where it lives in tropical rainforest, building silk tube retreats along vertical surfaces.
  • Where The Name Comes From: The reflective orange legs flashing against the black base are exactly what earned this species its Suntiger name.
  • Captive Bred: All tarantulas at Exotics Unlimited are captive bred.
