Cerbalus sp. 'Egypt' white huntsman spider Adult Female

Cerbalus sp. 'Egypt' (White Huntsman Spider)

The Egypt White Huntsman, or Cerbalus sp. 'Egypt', is a desert huntsman spider from Egypt. Cerbalus are sand dwelling huntsmen from the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, and this one has a pale, near white coloration that blends into the sand it lives on. Like other huntsmen it is flat, long legged and very fast. This is a true spider, not a tarantula, offered here as an adult female.

Why do hobbyists keep the Egypt White Huntsman?

• Pale Desert Coloration: A near white spider built to disappear against desert sand.
• Burrowing Behavior: Cerbalus dig into sand and use a burrow as a retreat, which is fun to watch in a deep sand setup.
• Fast Hunter: Huntsmen chase down prey instead of waiting in a web, so feeding is quick and active.
• Adult Female: No waiting on growth and no guessing at sex.
• Rare in the Hobby: A desert huntsman you rarely see offered in the US.

How should Cerbalus sp. 'Egypt' be kept?

• Enclosure: A secure, escape proof enclosure with more floor space than height and a few inches of dry sand or sandy substrate it can dig into.
• Humidity: This is a desert species and is not kept wet. Keep the substrate dry, with a slightly damp spot at the bottom of one corner.
• Water: A shallow water dish works well.
• Diet: Crickets or roaches, offered at least once a week.
• Temperament: Very fast. Open the enclosure slowly and use long tongs for feeding and maintenance.
