Peruvian Pumice Rock
Peruvian Pumice Rock — Lightweight Volcanic Stone for Vivariums, Bioactive Terrariums & Natural Hardscape
Description:
Peruvian pumice is one of the most versatile stones you can put in a planted enclosure. It's lightweight, naturally porous, and holds the perfect balance of moisture and airflow — exactly what tropical frogs, tarantulas, and invertebrates need to thrive. This volcanic stone has been a bioactive staple for years because it does three things at once: it drains, it breathes, and it gives moss and plants something to grip onto.
What Peruvian pumice does for your enclosure:
- Drainage layer that actually works — Place at the bottom of your tank to keep substrate from sitting in water. Critical for tropical setups, paludariums, and any enclosure where root rot is a concern
- Aeration for bioactive substrate — Mix into substrate to prevent compaction and keep beneficial microfauna (springtails, isopods) thriving
- Moss and plant mounting surface — Porous texture traps moisture and gives mosses, liverworts, and epiphytic plants a natural anchor point
- Lightweight hardscape — Build rock features, ledges, and climbing structures without the weight of denser stone — easier to stack, move, and on your tank stand
- Humidity buffer — Holds moisture without becoming waterlogged, helping stabilize humidity swings in tropical enclosures
Perfect for frogs, tarantulas, invertebrates & bioactive setups:
- Dart frogs & tree frogs — Use as a drainage layer under ABG or tropical substrate; porosity helps maintain high humidity while preventing anaerobic conditions that cause root rot and bacterial blooms
- Tarantulas — Mix into substrate to improve aeration and prevent compaction, especially valuable for burrowing species that need a stable, well-drained substrate that won't collapse
- Isopods, millipedes & other invertebrates — Bioactive powerhouse that shelters beneficial microfauna, holds moisture in micro-pockets, and adds structural variety to substrate mixes
- Planted vivariums — Volcanic texture blends into rainforest-style builds and gives moss walls, epiphyte mounts, and climbing plants a natural surface to establish on
Choose the right size for your build:
- 1 lb — Small accents, test pieces (1–2 very small rocks)
- 5 lb Smaller Rocks — 12x12x18 or 10-gallon tank (2–3 small rocks)
- 5 lb Larger Rocks — 12x12x18 or 10-gallon tank (1–2 larger rocks)
- 10 lb Smaller Rocks — 18x18x18 or 20–30 gallon tank (3–6 small rocks)
- 10 lb Larger Rocks — 18x18x18 or 20–30 gallon tank (2–4 larger rocks)
- 10 lb Mixed Rocks — 18x18x18 or 20–30 gallon tank (3–5 mixed sizes)
- 20 lb Smaller Rocks — 36x18x18 or 55+ gallon tank (6–10 small rocks)
- 20 lb Larger Rocks — 36x18x18 or 55+ gallon tank (3–5 larger rocks)
- 20 lb Mixed Rocks — 36x18x18 or 55+ gallon tank (4–8 mixed sizes)
Directions for use: Rinse thoroughly with clean water before adding to your enclosure. Peruvian pumice arrives with natural volcanic dust that needs to be washed off — multiple rinses may be needed until the water runs clear. For best results, soak and scrub each piece before placing it in your vivarium, terrarium, or paludarium.
